Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

Have you ever had a beer where, upon smelling it, your eyes go wide and you say to yourself, "Monster Hops!" Well, for me, this was one of those beers. The hop aroma is off the charts with big, dank, earthy, citrus and spicy hop aromas. There is also a strong yeast spiciness that is very... Read More

This IPA has an element of a strong, newer hop variety featuring a bold, earthy character that is often referred to as being dank. A grapefruit citrus aroma becomes more obvious as it warms. Additionally, hop spiciness, fruit esters, and light caramel malts also come through in the nose. The... Read More

This beer was judged as a Fruit Lambic (23F). The typical “barnyard” aromas of horse blanket and earthiness are present, though the grape is not really noticeable in the nose. Some wheat grain, slightly bready, and a light acidic aroma are also present. The color is light straw with a pale haze... Read More
