Beer Judge

Rodney Tillinghast has been pursuing the perfect pint after his first sip of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in a Buffalo tavern in 1988.  Since then, he expanded his beer horizons at every opportunity, including homebrewing for the past 25 years, being a BJCP beer judge for 21 years, working commercially as a brewer at Brown’s Brewing Company for a spell, and tasting beer throughout his travels all across the US and abroad.  He attained the BJCP rank of National Judge early in 2015.

Rodney presently lives in North Carolina with his “beer widow” wife and two fine sons.

Rucksack by Monday Night Brewing was judged as a German Weissbier (Style 10A). A monstrous, pillowy white head rested atop the hazy golden brew, bubbling up with a very strong carbonation level. The beer offered up healthy aromas of spicy clove and banana, supported by a sweet, crackery malt... Low Road Schwarzbier by Low Road Brewing poured quite black, almost black, but there were some highlights towards a brown ale in there. Very well poured with a head that persisted.

When we went to aroma, I received some slight... Read More

When a palate tires of the oftentimes hop-intensive craft beer scene, it’s always nice to dial it down with an approachable and drinkable American Amber Ale. Today’s ale poured a beautiful deep copper color, tinged with crimson highlights. I was struck immediately by this beer's comforting... Read More

This beer presented itself a muddled yellow below a huge, frothy head.   I sensed substantial levels of fruit in the nose—mango, pineapple, and a hint of lemon.  It featured a crisp, citrus tartness in the flavor, with good levels of acidity and fruit flavor.  Its substantial measure of... Space Lettuce by Monday Night Brewing was judged as a Double IPA (BJCP Style 22A). Featuring a sick amount of mango and lemon zest aromas, this beer's aromatic elements were complex and underpinned by pine resin.

Bright, light crackery malt came through both in the aroma and in the... Read More

Low Road Oktoberfest by Low Road Brewing poured a firm amber out of the crowler presented (Style 4B–Festbier) that was quite clear with a snow white head that lingered slightly and then backed down straight away.

The aromas... Read More
