Beer Judge

Rodney Tillinghast has been pursuing the perfect pint after his first sip of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in a Buffalo tavern in 1988.  Since then, he expanded his beer horizons at every opportunity, including homebrewing for the past 25 years, being a BJCP beer judge for 21 years, working commercially as a brewer at Brown’s Brewing Company for a spell, and tasting beer throughout his travels all across the US and abroad.  He attained the BJCP rank of National Judge early in 2015.

Rodney presently lives in North Carolina with his “beer widow” wife and two fine sons.

Picked up and opened as an American IPA (Style 21A) per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines, this ale pours a light amber with more haze than expected, but nowadays a bit of haze is more than acceptable for style. It poured out with a firm white head with a stubborn amount of lacing going forward. ... I poured this obsidian-colored stout into my standard Belgian snifter and let it sit for a few minutes to warm towards room temperature. Surprisingly, I recognized its bourbon aroma from across the room while preparing my review notepad for use.

The beer’s aroma comes across originally as... Read More

This beer marries two summer beer ingredient standards---peach and apricot.  Today’s sample poured a hazy dark gold, as an unfiltered wheat ale should.  Its snow white head was dense, but fell quickly to get down to the tasting business.  Aromas noted included mild dried apricot, some green... Ante Meridiem by Monday Night Brewing was judged as an Imperial Brown Ale (Style 33B—Specialty Wood Aged Beer). Weighing in at a hefty 13.5% ABV, as I sampled the thick dark brew, it was hard to find any perceived hotness from the alcohol. Although I was able to coax a head out of the beer, it... Read More

When the nights are long and temperatures get nippy, it's always a pleasure to look forward to a Winter Seasonal Ale (Style 30C) to sip at. Snow Bird by Low Road Brewing poured a dark amber with mysterious tawny highlights. While the... Read More

“Dark as a stormy night with a sweet kiss of chocolate bourbon;" that’s the phrase that kept going through my mind as I sipped on this luscious stout. This brew poured mighty dark, and I coaxed a nice, tightly formed head into my snifter, which was followed up in the aroma by strong, dark ...
