Beer Judge

Josh Weikert took up homebrewing in 2007 as a means of staying sane during graduate school, and even though school is over, the brewing continues! He is a founding member and past president of the Stoney Creek Homebrewers, has medaled in every BJCP beer style, is a BJCP Grand Master Judge and Certified Cicerone, and is a two-time Eastern Pennsylvania Homebrewer of the Year.  He is also the author of the Beer: Simple blog (beer-simple.com).

Josh is a professor and lecturer in political science, specializing in political communication and political psychology. He lives in Collegeville, PA with his wife, Barbara (also an award-winning brewer), and their dog Biscuit (who has yet to win any medals, but is remarkably happy to watch on brew days).

The beer pours a clear pale copper with a thin white head. My sample had just a touch of haze that might've ... Read More

Double IPAs are a study in extremes, but too many fizzle out on the palate for lack of character or balance. This one is OK, but that's it – just OK. It stops short of “failing,” but it doesn’t quite succeed either.

Ommegang's first-ever Double IPA is a solid entry into the category.

It pours clear and gold with a thin white head. The aroma is hop-forward, as you might imagine, with notes of pine, tropical fruit and citrus -- though it isn't as prominent as you'd find in other beers in this... Read More

When the Lights Go Out by Sun King Brewery (judged under BJCP category 30A, Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer) is a coffee porter.  That pretty much says it all.

The beer pours a deep mahogany with a dense off-white head, and the aroma exhibits a low level of coffee and cocoa roast, and bit of... Read More
