Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Drip au Lait Orange Almond

Drip au Lait Orange Almond

Drip au Lait Orange Almond, Urban South Brewery
Description

We took this Drip Au Lait to another level. We started with a toasted almond cream base, added sweet valencia orange juice to give it a creamsicle like twist. We chose Hipp Family Honduran Monte Verde Natural for its sweet flavor profile and pineapple quality. Some of the coffee was dosed via cold brew and then we cold steeped a pound per barrel of Whole Bean for 24 hours for that added, fresh roasted coffee aroma!

This IPA pours a toasty golden color with great clarity and a thick white head that sticks. The hops aren’t as big as you’d expect, but are still plentiful with notes of pine, resin, grapefruit, passion fruit and peach. The malt is a bit bolder than desired, almost to an English IPA level, which... Aldersbacher Kloster Weisse Dunkel

Aldersbacher Kloster Weisse Dunkel, Aldersbacher Brewery
Description

A beautiful mahogany color is derived from the use of wheat, dark roasted barley and aroma malts. The nose is all fruit and toasted notes, deep, complex and alluring. On the palate are notes of caramel, fruit and a slight sweetness—framed beautifully by the full body and long, satisfying finish.

This Saison pours a deep straw color with brilliant clarity and a large white head. Spicy notes are noticeable the second the beer hits the glass and the nose is all the about the spice.
