Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Cosmic Shores by Cape May Brewing Co. is a hazy IPA that falls into BJCP 2021 category 21C Hazy IPA.

The beer looks the part, with a cloudy yellow color and a big fluffy off-white head, although it fades quickly. The aroma is hop-forward with a lot of citrus \and tropical notes - lemon,... Read More

This beer pours a hazy deep golden with an orange hue and a big white head that sticks to the glass and actually hangs around longer than the beer itself. The aroma is definitely heavy on the Mosaic hops with lots of complex fruitiness – melon, berries, candied orange, apricot and grapefruit all... Read More

Snag & Drop by Cape May Brewing refers to itself as a Triple IPA, but this doesn’t exist under the BJCP guidelines, therefore it falls under the high end of a Double IPA and will be judged as such by BJCP 2015 Category 22A. It meets all of the parameters of the double IPA, just a bit boozier... Read More

Insufficient Clearance IPA by Sketchbook Brewing Co. is an IPA that best fits under the BJCP category 21B for specialty IPA as a New England style. Lake Haze #10 by Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. is a Double IPA (BJCP category 22A), but due to its ultra-hazy nature and low bitterness it falls into the Specialty IPA subcategory (21B) as a New England Style. It pours a murky yellow with some orange notes and is so opaque that it’s almost honey-... Read More
