Flor de Jamaica, Miel Brewery & Taproom
Description

Flor de Jamaica is a gose brewed with hibiscus flowers, cinnamon bark, and pink Himalayan salt. Hibiscus gives this beer is notable color and flavor while the cinnamon bark balances out the floral notes with warm spice. The pink sea salt accentuates the crisp and sour finish. More complex than it appears, at 6% ABV this beer pairs perfectly with warm evenings and spicy foods. This beer was inspired by the tropical playas of Honduras, where our brewery co-founder Janice grew up and enjoyed many summer drinks utilizing refreshing hibiscus tea.

Flor de Jamaica by Miel Brewery & Taproom is being evaluated as a Category 30A Spice, Herb and Vegetable Beer with a Category 27 Historical Beer – Gose base as per the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines.

The aroma has a moderate tart lactic character along with a touch of a floral note and brown spice behind it. The base gose aroma is spot-on with a light wheat character coming through. The beer is a hazy cherry-red color with a pinkish small-bubble head that dissipates very quickly. A gose should have better retention than this.

The flavor is very much like the aroma.  A moderate metallic lactic tart/sour character greets you up front, with a touch of wheat, floral and cinnamon following. The overall sweetness level is low. The salt level is moderate and appropriate for the gose style. The middle and finish is quite dry with a very clean and bright aftertaste. The flavor of the wheat backbone does linger through the finish, as expected for the gose style. The body is medium-thin, which helps deliver the refreshing character of this offering. The carbonation is moderate.

This would be a great refreshing summer quaffer. While the floral and spice addition in this brew is quite subtle for the style, there are few distractions from the flavor of the very well-crafted gose base.
