Barrel Aged Brownie Batter Blend #3: Loaded French Toast by Pontoon Brewing was evaluated as a cross of BJCP 2015 style 31B, Alternative Sugar Beer, and 33A, Wood-Aged Beer, with a base style of 16A, Sweet Stout (Imperial strength). Very complex for sure! Pouring an opaque very deep brown, there is a moderate very dark tan head of tiny bubbles that quickly disappears as if the beer is quite high in alcohol. The initial aroma is huge coconut with a big and sweet fudge chocolate nose, big vanilla and moderate maple. The flavor is a huge very sweet fudge/vanilla/coconut/maple barrage that lingers into a very long sweet finish. There is moderate carbonation, but very little foam is generated because of the apparent big alcohol. This is a big beer with a very full body, and the alcohol is quite high but very smooth. There are no signs of hop aroma or flavor, and only a very slight hop bittering. As the beer warms, the coconut continues to dominate, but the sweet chocolate fudge remains huge with the maple coming in stronger too. This is a very sweet dessert beer that should be enjoyed slowly in a tulip or snifter. Warm fireplace, outside hot tub when it's snowing -- this beer stands alone and doesn't need to be paired with any food, although a nice charcuterie board with Sultana golden raisins, low-profile cheeses (provolone, Monterrey jack, edam, maybe a mild Swiss) and some slices of mild sausage might work well.
