Super Session #3 (Comet) by Lawson's Finest Liquids is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA (2021 BJCP Guidelines Category (21B) with the special criteria of being designated as a Session IPA.
Fresh, fragrant hops dominate the aroma profile with notes of honeysuckle, pineapple and apricot. There is no yeast or malt presence detected allowing the hops to be showcased. The beer pours a clear blonde with a moderately thin white head that falls quickly. The flavor is well balanced with juicy hop flavors of apricot and freshly squeezed orange juice with a moderate supporting hop bitterness. There is a pleasant bread-like malt flavor beneath that creates backbone without getting in the way. The body is bigger than average for a session IPA, which often comes across too thin. There isn't any harshness to be found from hops in this light beer, which aids in drinkability, one of the most important aspects of the style. Hop flavor is lacking on the finish but that is quite alright – in its own way it encourages the next sip or the next can from the refrigerator. Session IPAs can come across as misunderstood American Pale Ales but the best examples distinguish themselves as purveyors of hop flavor and aroma while maintaining the utmost crushability. This beer checks those boxes with flying colors and is worth seeking out.
