Huge Hefe by Low Road Brewing is a Weissbier and was judged as one (BJCP sub-style 10A). It poured straw to light gold with a slight haze into the glass, producing a thick white head with only modest retention.
The aroma initially featured banana esters followed by faint clove phenols, a combination suggesting reliance on warmer fermentation temperatures. The flavor profile echoed that of the aroma, with banana dominant on the palate. Consistent with style, there was no evidence of the use of flavor or aroma hops, only bittering ones to balance the sweeter esters. There were also no strong malt aromas or flavors, but rather pleasant “bready” flavors consistent with the style. The mouthfeel consisted of a medium, crisp body with low bitterness, but somewhat less carbonation than expected for this style. Alcohol warmth and any astringencies were absent, which again was to style.
Overall, this is a refreshing, well-balanced beer, perfect for quaffing in warm summer weather. It is an exceptional example of a well-brewed Weissbier and should appeal to a wide range of experienced beer drinkers.
