He Is Resin is a West Coast IPA from Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. is being judged according to the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines, Category 21A - American IPA.
Heavy fresh citrus and pine hops emanate from the glass as I lift it towards me and then I perceive the lightly sweet bread malt and soft tangerine notes. The beer is mostly clear straw gold with just the slightest haze, and a large, frothy white head and long retention with some lacing. A moderate white grapefruit hop flavor greets my first sip and is supported by medium biscuit and doughy bread malt. Medium body and carbonation.
There is a light, perfume and floral alcohol component to the aroma following the initial sniff yet the pine and grapefruit hops quickly push it aside. Light pineapple and mango notes round out the clean aroma. The head continues persisting late into my evaluation as I enjoy further studying quaffs that bring about those same sticky tropical notes (pineapple, mango) previously noted in the aroma. The beer is balanced toward the hops and it finishes dry despite some lingering malt sweetness. Late in the glass a light grassy hop note emerges, reminding me of the hop freshness.
I would enjoy a crispy chicken cordon blue with this beer or a funky, spicy blue cheese.
