Foxbody 5.0 by Hometown Brewing Co. is being evaluated as a Munich Helles (Category 4A) from the 2021 BJCP Style guidelines.

This beer starts with moderate aromas of complex malt, rich melanoidins, toasted bread crumbs and oven-fresh bread. A slight hop character is spicy and floral. There’s a distinct biscuit malt aroma secondary to the rich malt as it warms in the glass.

The beer was poured into the glass and showed an amber color with brilliant clarity. The thin white head was compact with many fine bubbles rising to the top. The darker color was not indicative of a Munich Helles, and neither were the rich malt aromas.

On the first sip the flavor is malty with layers of toasted bread crumbs and rich melanoidins. The spicy hops were low and provided just enough character to balance the malt. The bitterness is low as well and with no residual sweetness, this is a very clean lager indeed. The finish is short and malty dry, which begs for another thirst-quenching sip.

A medium body and moderately low carbonation gives it a slight creaminess, making it very agreeable on the palate.

The flavors make this beer hard to put down and the low ABV helps make this eminently drinkable after a long day. I enjoyed the malt complexity and spicy hops that create a perfect harmony of drinkability. Would pair well with traditional German foods or dry charcuterie meats and alpine-style cheese to complement the malty goodness of this beer.
