Everything But The Kitchen Sink Hazy Juicy IPA by Two Roads Brewing Co. was judged as BJCP category 21B, New England IPA. The aroma opens with a combination of fresh cut grass, grapefruit and some pine resin. A touch of pineapple joins in after it warms a little. There is a subtle hint of bready malt hiding behind the hops. Nothing off or out of place but just a little short on what I would identify as “juicy.”
The beer presents a big foamy white head that drops out rather quickly for a beer of this style. There is a thin, wispy, creamy topping on the beer that does persist to the finish. Orange to light golden glow. Very hazy without being murky. The flavor provides a moderately high level of slightly bitter orange and grapefruit hop character with a touch of pineapple. The pine resin comes through mid-palate. Bready malts are slightly more noticeable in the flavor. Moderately bitter that seems a touch too high for a NEIPA. The finish is medium with a drying impression from some hop astringency. The aftertaste lingers with pineapple and the grassy hops make a showing. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation levels and a slight hop burn to the palate. A little astringent sting from the hops leaving a lingering tingle on the tongue, rather than the smooth quality expected for the style.
I found the beer to be quite enjoyable, the citrus and pine qualities seem to be somewhat influenced by west coast IPAs. Combined with the grassy dry hop notes, the overall impression falls short of the juicy quality that defines the style. While I did get some pineapple notes, no other tropical fruits were noted. The hop burn was also a little distracting, maybe a touch more wheat or oats would help soften the beer. When all is said and done, it is a nice hoppy ale that just misses some of the qualities expected in the style.
