4 Seasons Winter ‘20 by Mother Earth Brew Co. was judged as a Specialty Wood-Aged Beer (33B). It was brewed with coffee, chocolate and lactose. Coffee leaps out in the aroma and is huge in the nose of this beer. With some additional effort, cocoa and vanilla start to come through. The color is a very dark brown, nearly black. The beer is not cloudy, simply very dark from the grains and additions. The slightest of heads just rims the edge of the glass with very thin, off-white bubbles scattered in swirls across the surface. Whereas the aroma would suggest coffee might dominate the flavor, the relatively intense coffee flavor actually takes a backseat to an even more intense chocolate quality. Some stone fruit qualities are there early in the flavor, but that is overridden by a bit of coffee ashiness and alcohol fusels as it moves through the palate and into the finish. The mouthfeel has some burn from the alcohol, and the body is very full. Overall, this is a very aggressive beer with dominating flavors that get a little carried away in my opinion. If you are a fan of coffee stouts, this is truly an Imperial version of that more common experimental style, but quite ramped up and with a chocolate boost to elevate it even further.
