Orange Crush by Flying Dog Brewery is being evaluated as a Fruit Beer (Category 29A) with a Blonde Ale (Category 18A) as the base beer per the 2015 BJCP style guidelines.
This beer pours a dark gold color with moderate hazy clarity, which adds a slightly orange tint. A fleeting white head of tiny bubbles leaves a ring around the edge of the glass. The aroma consists of moderate aroma curacao orange peel which is at the forefront and takes the stage. No malt and yeast notes are detectable in this beer, but there is a low note of ethyl alcohol as the beer warms. On the sip, a moderate flavor of fresh orange juice is quickly replaced by a lingering orange peel-type bitterness with a slight medicinal quality, which manifests itself in the finish. There is a very low wheat flavor in this beer with a low malt sweetness. Any hop flavor appears to be lost behind the prominent added orange component of this beer. Beer balances towards the bitter, though it does not seem to be a hop-derived bitterness. This beer has a moderate body with medium carbonation. There is very slight alcohol warmth and no astringency noted in this beer. Overall, this beer was fairly one-dimensional and the lingering bitterness coupled with the low medicinal quality in the finish detracts from the overall drinking pleasure of this beer and makes this beer slightly unpleasant to drink.
