Redux Chocolate Rum Stout by Garage Brewing Co. was judged as Mixed-Style Beer (34B BJCP 2021) with a base styles of Specialty Wood-aged Beer (33B), Imperial Stout (20C) and Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A). Roll out the [rum] barrel! Wow, you won’t miss the rum aroma on this beer! Rum alcohol is quite apparent straight out of the gate, and the stout and chocolate that are integrated into this beer are playing supporting roles that do not make a big appearance in the aroma. The appearance is opaque brown, almost black. There is no head, but a few bubbles rise and linger on the edge of the glass. The flavor has more complexity than the aroma, but clear rum flavors do come through. A deep, rich cherry fruit flavor and a mild chocolate character provide a strong fruit and spice note. There is a hint of wood-pithiness also, and also a clear expression of alcohol in the flavor that is solvent- and fusel-like. The mouthfeel is distinctively warm, approaching hot, from the alcohol. You will not miss that this a huge beer! Overall, the rum alcohol is really dominating, and the beer is just playing a supporting role. If you really love rum, and you are curious about what a rum blended with an imperial stout might taste like, this beer will give you a great idea of that. For me, the expression of fruit is the strongest quality, but the rum intensity is simply too much.
