Magnolia Brewing Co. Releases First Cans: Proving Ground IPA & Kalifornia Kölsch

Magnolia Brewing Co., on the eve of its 20th anniversary, will now offer two of its flagship beers – Kalifornia Kölsch and Proving Ground IPA – in 12-oz cans as its first packaged beer release. These can releases bring unmatchable portability to two iconic Magnolia beers, enabling them to be enjoyed not only at restaurants and bars but also at home and the many outdoor locations where cans are often the most practical choice. Putting Magnolia beer in cans also reaffirms the brewery’s commitments to quality and sustainability, given cans’ absolute barriers to oxygen and light as well as being lightweight when shipped and offering outstanding recyclability.

“Many Magnolia fans have very long, enthusiastic relationships with these two beers and so do we, of course,” says Dave McLean, founder and brewmaster at Magnolia Brewing Company. “They are two of our favorites at the brewery and I don’t think anyone could be more excited than I am to see these beers in cans and to drink them in so many new places. Kalifornia Kölsch represents our love for balanced, nuanced, session beers with great drinkability. Proving Ground IPA showcases a hybrid approach to IPA, marrying an aggressive, American hop profile with an English malt backbone built around our favorite malt, Maris Otter.”

Kalifornia Kölsch is a light, crisp golden ale in the style of those brewed in Cologne, Germany. San Francisco locals have come to love the brew for its subtle aroma, its herbal, spicy hop character and delicate pilsner malt notes as well as its clean, bright finish with just enough complexity, derived in part from its atypical, cool ale fermentation.

Proving Ground IPA is a full-flavored and assertively-hopped IPA showcasing generous amounts of American hops alongside an unexpected deployment of British Maris Otter malt that provides a strong foil to the hop attack. The brew’s bright citrus and pine aromas are followed by a resinous, spicy bitterness. Hop lovers rave about the bitterness that lingers through the beer’s finish, counterpointed by the roundness of the malt.

The new six-pack releases of Kalifornia Kölsch and Proving Ground IPA will be available throughout Magnolia’s San Francisco Bay Area distribution footprint beginning on February 15th, as well as in Portland and Los Angeles, with further expansion coming soon. Cans will also be available for sale at Magnolia’s two San Francisco brewery locations, Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery in the Haight Ashbury and Smokestack in Dogpatch. Magnolia Brewing Company is planning additional can releases in the coming year, including its very first brew, the much beloved Blue Bell Bitter, an English-style ESB.
