Those familiar with Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout varietals know they are delicious, highly sought after, and not cheap. This, coupled with the knowledge that the company is backed by the largest brewer in the world, makes news of an infection even more surprising.
Nevertheless, multiple batches of Bourbon County have been reported to been infected with lactobacillus acetotolerans, resulting in a soured Bourbon County. Nine bottlings of the signature Bourbon County Brand Stout and all of its Chicago-only Proprietor's Bourbon County Brand Stout were pushed into the market despite the infection. Goose Island will offer $15 refunds with proof of purchase.
The aptly named Ken Stout, Goose Island's president and GM, said the lacto likely came from the tanks used to transport the beer from the brewery's barrel-aging warehouse to its Fulton Market bottling facility.
“This is unfortunate for all involved—for our fans, for our brewers who take so much pride in this beer—but we're going to be a better barrel-aging facility as a result of this,” Stout said.
In total, about 20 percent of the total volume of 2015 Bourbon County was affected.
