Straw-BERRY Fields Hazy Milkshake IPA by Garage Brewing Co. was judged according the the 2021 BJCP guidelines for category 29A Fruit Beer - strawberry fruit mixed in a Hazy IPA base style.
The beer is presented in a large krug glass at 50oF, and shows a milky light amber color with a thick layer of off-white foam that has a great stand. Upon closer inspection, there are small outgassing bubbles often typical of nitrogenization, as well as some suspended fine solids.
The aroma is rich and sweet with bright and fresh strawberry jam notes dominating above a light floral/fruity hop character and backed by a pretty obvious honey sweetness. Overall, the nose is very fruity and leans sweet, but does have an interesting tart/acid angle, vaguely reminiscent of SweeTarts (a flavor imprinted in the brain thanks to a few Halloweens some decades back).
The flavor is juicy up front with a firm bitterness and some nice lightly fruity hop flavors of peach, apricot and melon that then trails into a strong strawberry jam sweetness in the mid-palate. The late palate is lingering bitter and fruity with a nice acid and sweetness balance in the very long finish. The body is thick and creamy and the gas level is low. Weirdly, while being overtly fruity and distinctly off-dry, bordering on sweet, the hop character really structures the beer in the following order: bitterness early, nice rounding flavors in the middle and a late drying character in the aftertaste. Overall, it's a pretty big and chewy fruit-hop bomb with a chaser spoonful of red jam, and I surprisingly dig it. Brewers are making crazy new takes on styles using novel ingredients and approaches, including something like this - fruity, sweet, hoppy, bitter AND juicy. I think a salty beer snack, like nuts or pretzels or snack mix would go great here. It's a wild world out there - go get some.
