Alphagator by Abita Brewing Co. was judged as #22A (Double IPA) according to the 2021 BJCP Guidelines. There is no Imperial IPA category and the most appropriate style is the double IPA. The aroma of this beer had very strong hints of citrus, most notably grapefruit that was very aromatic and prevalent due to the generous hops. The pour revealed a nice hazy, cloudy straw-like hue. It had very good carbonation with small, tight white bubbles that lingered in the glass indefinitely. The flavor instantaneously had a really nice malt sweetness where it was the dominant flavor while the hop bitterness lingered secondarily in the background. Again, a nice citrusy flavor (grapefruit) due to the hop varietal. The hops were restrained and complemented the nice grain flavor without overwhelming it. The alcohol is there (8.5 %), however, it was smooth and didn't have the "harshness" and "burn" associated with a heavy alcoholic beer, such as this. The body and mouthfeel of this beer was about medium. The beer was well carbonated and sparkling in the palate. The aftertaste was smooth and clean with a lingering sweetness. Because of its drinkability one must be cautious, because this beer can be deceiving and sneak up on you.
