Honeycomb Hideout from Low Road Brewing was judged according to the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines, Category 31B – Alternative Sugar Beer, though the base style is an American Wheat Beer.

Fresh raw honey notes emerge above the huge, frothy and coarse-bubbled white head alongside medium-high grainy and white cracker malt. The beer pours a slightly hazy golden straw, and the aforementioned head slowly diminishes over a few minutes. Moderate honey sweetness comes through upfront in the flavor while a medium hop bitterness keeps it in check. The honey lingers into the finish where it yields enough to let some warm, doughy malt notes through. Light alcohol flavors present late, particularly after the beer warms.

Back to the aroma after a few big sniffs, I get some light straw and hay notes, as well as faint pear esters. No hops are perceptible in the aroma, nor is there any hop flavor. Several quaffs in and the head remains a single layer of coarse bubbles on top of the beer. The faint pear esters transfer over from the aroma. The body is medium-high as is the carbonation. This beer fits the style well in that it retains its base beer character while allowing the honey to shine. The alcohol character does detract somewhat from the overall enjoyment.

This beer would pair well with a soft angel food cake.
