Rocket Pop Gose by Urban South Brewery is being evaluated as a Fruit Beer (Category 29A) from the 2015 BJCP Style guidelines.
This beer has aromas of doughy malt and moderate fruity esters in the form of red berries and limeade. No hop aromas were detected.
The color of this beer is rich gold with a pinkish hue reminiscent of a darker ruby-red grapefruit juice. The clarity is hazy and had a thin white head that disappeared quickly, which was true to style. The carbonation was seen and heard to be champagne-like as many bubbles were seen rising to the surface.
Flavors start as unsweetened limeade followed by milk chocolate. There were no hops detected in the flavor or bitterness. The tartness of the beer increases with each sip as the lime takes center stage. Flavors of cherries and raspberries add complexity and dimension. It is not overly salty as far as goses go, and finishes dry and fruity.
Very high carbonation as noted in the appearance, which gives the tongue a prickly feeling. The very light body adds to the beer’s drinkability. It’s also puckery from the base beer’s wheat, yeast and added fruit.
Here’s a drinkable beer that enhances the base gose style by adding fruit. At times the flavors seem muddled and disjointed. However, it’s commendable when a brewery goes out of their way to offer something no one has ever tried before; in this case, attempting to recreate a childhood treat in the form of beer.
