Rollin Deeper by Wild Leap Brew Co. is an Imperial Stout (BJCP category 20C), however due to the addition of vanilla & cinnamon it shifts to Spice, Herb & Vegetable Beer (BJCP Category 30A).
This beer pours a pitch black color that seems clear along the edges. It has a deep tan head that clings to the glass. The aroma is spice-forward but not distinctly cinnamon, more like allspice, as well as some vanilla. Afterwards is burnt sugar, caramel, raisins, toast and apple with a little booze underneath. The flavor leans more to the sweet side with lots of caramel, dark/dried fruit (raisins, prunes, cherry) and rich bread crust. There is a light cocoa character, but lacking any real roast. The vanilla builds onto the sweetness along with the low bitterness balance. At the back end, it's spice forward and you can feel it on your tongue. It’s like biting into a heavily spiced dense cinnamon bun with vanilla caramel frosting. It’s full bodied with a slight alcoholic warmth, which peeks out more due to the spices, but still well hidden for the ABV. The strong sweetness on the other hand helps keep the pace. It does a pretty good job landing the mark of a cinnamon bun, but it’s too spicy and sweet, keeping it from being as good as it could be. It would mess with the goal, but it could use more roast to cut the sweetness. Maybe more of a cinnamon pot de crème.
