C’mon Sunshine by Birds Fly South Ale Project is labeled as a Farmhouse Ale, but technically should be evaluated as a BJCP Category 29A Brett Beer with a Cat 25B Saison base. As such, it is a nice marriage of characters of the two styles that works quite well!
The typical horse blanket barnyard aroma of Brett comes through quite well, along with an earthy and leathery character and a touch of metallic bite in the nose from the sourness. The brew is a turbid light golden color with an initially surprisingly large white head that dissipates quite quickly, as expected.
The Brett is the star of the show regarding flavor, delivering a moderate tartness along with a medium level of the barnyard character. This is a moderately aged Brett beer, in the fruitiness of a young Brett has subsided, but the overwhelming barnyard sourness of a well-aged Brett beer is not yet present. The base beer flavor beyond the Brett character is rather clean and lacking in complexity – cleaner than a typical Saison. The body is quite thin, which delivers a quite refreshing dry and crisp quality to the beer. The carbonation is highly effervescent. .
C’mon Sunshine is a surprisingly quaffable and approachable version of a Brett beer. While the Saison character of the base beer is a bit subtle, the overall presentation is quite well done and would be a great option for Summer refreshment.
