Urban South Brewery Director of Brewery Operations Alex Flores Talks King Cake Sour

We spoke with Urban South Brewery Director of Brewery Operations Alex Flores about King Cake Sour.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
Our Head Brewer came up with the concept as a small-batch, taproom-only release, and it evolved into a Mardi Gras seasonal release!

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
While it sounds crazy, I love the balance of this beer. It never leans too sweet or too sour. It has notes of all of the flavors of a traditional King Cake without being overwhelming.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
We stuck with King Cake Sour to make it as approachable and obvious as possible to show our intention with this product.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Maybe my DESSERT island beer... It actually would be great calorically on a desert island with limited resources but not sure how great it would be warm! I'll stick with a Helles on a deserted island!

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Oddly refreshing and decadently drinkable.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
This is always a beer that people go into assuming they will hate but end up really enjoying. It's been a very funny beer to watch people react to; similar to Malort Face!

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer
Obviously, King Cake! Now which King Cake is up to you, as that is a heavily debated topic in New Orleans.
