Scofflaw, Shipyard Settle A Super Bowl Bet With Beer

Atlanta, Ga.'s Scofflaw Brewing Co. and Portland, Me.'s Shipyard Brewing Co. made a Super Bowl bet. Whichever brewery's team lost would brew a beer with a recipe of the winner's choosing, along with ingredients indigenous to the winning team's state. As the Patriots won, Scofflaw brewed a New England style IPA which will be on tap this week in the brewery's tasting room. For all the details, see the release below:

ATLANTA (Tuesday, Mar. 28, 2017) – To honor a Super Bowl bet with its friends at Shipyard Brewing Company of Portland, Me., the Scofflaw Brewing Company of Atlanta will start serving a new IPA this week in its tasting room, which is open Thursdays through Sundays. G.O.A.T. is a “New England Compatriots-style IPA” brewed with Maine-grown malts and flaked oats that will make its debut at Scofflaw on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Made with Simcoe, Amarillo and Mosaic hops, the new unfiltered IPA honors the “Greatest Of All Time” New England Patriots while celebrating a friendly collaboration among these two craft brewers. But the game, the bet and pre-game jibes are not entirely forgotten.

According to the winners, G.O.A.T. has never-quit charm and character with a murky start that leads into winning flavors and aromas and a very surprising come-from-behind finish. “I think we’re safe in saying that our New England Patriots are the best football team of all time,” said Fred Forsley, the founder of Shipyard. “Now we get to see if our G.O.A.T. beer with Scofflaw is the greatest New England-style IPA of all time.”

The brewery on the losing side committed to brewing a special batch of beer from a recipe chosen by the winners. The beer had to include indigenous ingredients from the winner’s state. Scofflaw must fly a Patriot’s flag for one week or until the batch is gone, whichever comes first.

Scofflaw Brewmaster Travis Herman said this new IPA with a 7.9% ABV is designed to help ease the pain of the Atlanta Falcons loss. There will be something for Patriots fans as well. “For spring days when the Atlanta weather is cool,” said Herman, “we’ll use lower pressure in our kegs so Patriots fans can hold on to their glass.”

Shipyard head brewer Joe Rank helped develop the recipe with Herman and suggested the beer’s name as a nod to his favorite football team and Scofflaw.
