In the heart of San Francisco's bustling South Park neighborhood, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan embarked on a mission in 2000 that would reshape the city's beer scene forever. Founding the 21st Amendment Brewery, they breathed new life into a tradition that had been nearly lost to history.
With a passion for craft brewing and a vision to recreate the vibrant beer culture of old San Francisco, Freccia and O’Sullivan drew inspiration from the city's rich brewing heritage. Researching the once-thriving breweries that dotted the city landscape in the early 20th century, they were struck by the sense of community these establishments fostered. From lively debates to family gatherings, these breweries were more than just places to enjoy a pint—they were the heartbeats of their neighborhoods.
However, the specter of Prohibition cast a shadow over this thriving culture, forcing many local breweries to shutter their doors. For over a decade, social interaction around beer became clandestine, relegated to speakeasies and hidden corners.
But with the repeal of Prohibition came a resurgence of hope. The 21st Amendment marked a turning point, allowing communities to once again embrace the joy of local brewing and camaraderie. Freccia and O’Sullivan seized this opportunity to create a space that honored the past while celebrating the future of craft beer.
Today, the 21st Amendment Brewery stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. Boasting a rotating selection of hand-crafted beers and mouthwatering cuisine, it has earned acclaim as not just a brewpub, but a cornerstone of the modern San Francisco experience.
