New Zealand Pale by pFriem Family Brewers is a showcase for tropical New Zealand hop character in a well-crafted pale ale. As there is no specific category for a NZ Pale Ale, this brew is being evaluated as a BJCP Category 18B American Pale Ale as per the 2021 BJCP style guidelines due to its overall character.
The aroma is loaded with what you could consider New Zealand hop character. It is extremely dank, with a sulfury character, overripe melon, grape and pineapple. There is a touch of a malt presence behind this. The beer is a clear golden color with a solid, small, white-bubbled head with very good retention and lace. It looks fantastic.
The flavor carries through from the aroma very well, with a strong dank hit of tropical fruit, melon and grape from the hops used. There is a subtle but present base malt backbone, along with moderate hop bitterness. This character stays throughout the drink, from initial sip though the flavorful yet moderately dry finish. The hop bitterness helps deliver this finish dryness in order to prepare the palate for the next flavorful sip. The body is medium to medium-thin, and the carbonation is moderate.
Overall, this is a great example of a pale ale using New Zealand hops. Anyone interested in understanding the character that these hops bring to the table should seek out this one. Well-crafted and delicious!
