Lemon Blueberry Blonde by Low Road Brewing is a surprisingly approachable offering in the Category 29A Fruit Beer as per the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines with the base beer being a Blond Ale. While the balance between the fruits/berries used is perhaps not ideal, the overall result is unmistakably a fruit beer!
A quite strong fresh blueberry aroma hits you upon popping the crowler, with the aforementioned lemon bringing up the rear. The blueberry aroma tends to build over time and seemly coats the nasal passages. There is little else noted beyond this in the aroma. The beer is a somewhat hazy deep golden color with a fair, white, small-bubble head with fair retention.
The flavor carries through a moderate fresh blueberry flavor with the lemon character in the background. Not much base malt is detected behind these flavors. The blueberry remains the dominant character throughout the drink well into the finish, and somewhat coats the palate. No bitterness is noted. The finish is medium dry and the fermentation is very clean. The body is light-to-medium, and the carbonation is somewhat light for the style.
This brew is truly an exercise in the use of blueberry flavor in a beer. There could have been a better balance between the blueberry and the lemon, however. Higher lemon levels could have cut some of the thickness seen on the palate from the blueberry to make it a bit more refreshing and clean up the finish.
