Introducing Our Brewery
Located on the banks of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Virginia, our 20-barrel brewhouse typically churns out 250 barrels of delicious craft beer a month – that’s around 500 large kegs, 83,000 cans, or 25,000 forty-ouncers if you’re classy. It also includes an 1100-square-foot tasting room open to the public where you can have a sip or several, purchase a keg, grab a six-pack, fill your growlers and score some Smartmouth swag. Our tasting room is family- friendly, our deck and driveway are dog-friendly.
The Story of Smartmouth
Epiphany and barley were not-so-secret ingredients that led our president Porter Hardy to take Smartmouth from homebrew experimentation to one of the Southeast's most promising startup craft breweries. After years of bottled up dreaming finally came to a head, Porter traded his briefcase and corner office for pint glasses and tap handles. Now, with help from inspired brewers and a collection of like-minded investors/friends, Smartmouth's ready to please palettes anywhere that'll have us.
Porter Hardy IV President
Porter Hardy, IV, as his first name would imply, was perhaps born to be a brewer. After a successful career in business law, Porter decided his true calling was to open a microbrewery in Norfolk, Virginia. Pinning him down on his favorite beer is pretty much impossible, but he’ll tell you he enjoys a good stout in the winter months, and a hefeweizen come summer.
During his free time, he hangs out with wife Kim and their two children. Periodically, the waves call to him and he flees to his hometown of Virginia Beach to surf. Porter also is an avid reader. He loves to cook and can grow mean heirloom tomatoes in his vegetable garden.
FAVORITE SMARTMOUTH QUOTE:
“Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”
