Guy’s night's first rule is that there are no rules. Okay, that isn't entirely accurate. But that doesn't rule out a spectacular guy’s night, especially if the host (you) has a man cave complete with a pool table, dartboard, vintage arcade games and a bar! Even so, just because you have a man cave doesn't mean you'll automatically have an incredible guy’s night. To make the evening memorable, you must be the host with the most, a creative master of ceremonies. So, whether you are planning a game night, playing some video games with your pals or playing an online poker tournament, you need to ensure you have the best beers available.
It's safe to say that we're now living in the golden age of beer. That means now is a fantastic moment to broaden your horizons—to embrace your favourites and learn more about them, or to try out completely new ones. There is practically something for everyone when it comes to beer. From bitter and sweet to sour and rustic to everything in between, the flavours are limitless. The only drawback is that all of these tastes can be overwhelming and perplexing. A trip to your local artisan beer shop could result in hundreds, if not thousands, of choices.
So, without further ado, I give you the best beers available right now and the reasons why I believe they are perfect at any time, but especially for a lads night in.
Modelo Especial
Modelo Especial is a warm-weather traditional Mexican beer that has weathered the test of time. This classic lager is a beautiful example of why Mexican lagers are so popular. Mexican brewing traditions sculpted the Vienna lager style into something genuinely unique—subtly toasted and caramel-forward, with a dry finish that keeps it crisp. If you don't have a Modelo Especial with your tacos or during your BBQ, you're doing it wrong.
Dale's Pale Ale
With Dale's Pale Ale, Oskar Blues has made the transfer easy from lager to ales— it even comes in a can with Rocky Mountain artwork! While this may give it the appearance of another popular local brew, these mountains will not turn blue when the beer is ready to drink, so don't wait. This fantastic American Pale Ale is perfect for a cold day. It has a vibrant hop flavour that is perfectly tempered with malt sweetness. It also has a lot more macho 6.5 per cent ABV, so don't try to play pong with it....or go ahead, and don't forget to show us the results on Instagram!
Miller Lite
Miller Lite has a reputation for being the perfect beer to keep on hand and enjoy by everybody. With the somewhat sweet malt, there's a light straw nature at play. On the back end, there's a slight hint of hops, along with a pleasant, dry fizz. When you factor in the 4.2 per cent ABV, you've got yourself a pretty drinking beer for a long day or night.
Pilsner Urquell
Few beers can boast a history dating back to the 13th century, but Pilsner Urquell, a near-perfect Pilsner, is one of them. It's made in Plzen, Czech Republic, a city known for its soft water, which lends a lovely, round finish to what would eventually become the iconic Czech pilsner. Pilsner Urquell is the most well-known and well-loved version of the style, having been produced since 1842.
Samuel Adams Boston Lager
While the real Samuel Adams never brewed, he was a pivotal figure in Boston history. Do you recall the U.S. Declaration of Independence? With its trusty caramel lager, Boston Beer Company's version of Samuel Adams has helped many people make the transition to craft beer – a fantastic go-to for just about every meal or event. Drink like a founding father if you want to drink like a real dad.
Heineken
Heineken seems like another simple, crowd-pleasing beer to keep in the backyard cooler while the meal cooks. The Dutch import has a bit more complexity in its gameplay. There's a distinct malt sweetness here, with a smidgeon of hop weight bit the tail end. It's difficult to argue with the simplicity of this beer when served ice cold.
Kostritzer Schwarzbier
Light lagers aren't all the same. A schwarzbier is a typical German beer that blends the clean, low-alcohol nature of a lager with the rich taste profile or dark roastiness, coffee or chocolate. It's essentially a dark lager, as it's also known. Köstritzer, which has been brewing in Germany since 1543, is one of the first Schwarzbier brewers.
Corona
No, not the virus! Put a lime in a bottle of Corona and set it aside. At any guy's night, we all know this is a crowd-pleasing beer. Lime, corn-fueled malts and a smidgeon of hoppy bitterness complement each other nicely. If you go with this, make sure to serve some good guacamole and plenty of chips.
